The number of coronavirus cases in Illinois has continued to grow this month prompting the cancellation of several events and closures of multiple Chicago-area schools to prevent its spread. Meanwhile, Gov. J.B. Pritzker has declared a disaster proclamation over the outbreak in the state, which is under a stay-at-home order until May 30.

Here's a look at the cases confirmed so far:

1,622 New Coronavirus Cases Reported as Illinois Enters Phase 3 of Reopening

More than 1,600 new coronavirus cases were reported in Illinois as nearly all of the state eases restrictions, entering a third phase of reopening Friday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed 1,622 new cases of the virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections since the pandemic began to 117,455.

With an additional 86 deaths, fatalities so far across the state now total 5,270, health officials said.

As of Friday, 3,599 people remained hospitalized with COVID-19. Of those, 980 were in intensive care units and 593 were on ventilators.

Illinois Reports 1,527 New Coronavirus Cases

With much of Illinois just one day away from its next phase of reopening, the state reported more than 1,500 new cases and over 100 fatalities in the last 24 hours.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed 1,527 new cases of the virus in the last day, bringing the total number of infections since the pandemic began to 115,833.

With an additional 104 deaths, fatalities so far across the state now total 5,186, health officials said.

As of Thursday, 3,649 people remained hospitalized with COVID-19. Of those, 1,009 were in intensive care units and 576 were on ventilators.

Over the last 24 hours, Illinois officials say that 25,993 new tests were conducted by state labs, bringing the statewide total to 829,966 tests. That leaves the seven-date positivity rate for the state at 8.3%.

Illinois Coronavirus Deaths Top 5,000 as State Nears Phase 3 of Reopening

As much of Illinois prepares to enter the next phase of reopening, the state reached a grim milestone on May 27.

Coronavirus-related fatalities topped 5,000 as the state reported an additional 160 deaths in the last 24 hours. The statewide total number of lives lost sat at 5,083 Wednesday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health also confirmed 1,111 new cases of the virus, bringing the total number of infections since the pandemic began to 114,306, many of which have already recovered, according to Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

As of Wednesday, 3,826 people remained hospitalized with COVID-19. Of those, 1,031 were in intensive care units and 592 were on ventilators.

Still, the numbers come as state officials said they believe Illinois may be coming off a peak and starting a downward trend.

Over the last 24 hours, Illinois officials say that 17,179 new tests were conducted by state labs, bringing the statewide total to 803,973 tests. That brings the seven-day positivity rate to 8.6%, according to IDPH.

1,178 New Coronavirus Cases Reported in Illinois as Deaths Near 5,000

With much of Illinois just days away from the next phase of reopening, the state reported more than 1,100 new coronavirus cases and 39 additional deaths.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed 1,178 new cases of the virus, bringing the total number of infections since the pandemic began to 113,195.

The 39 additional deaths lift the state's total fatalities to 4,923. It also marks the first time the state has seen a decrease in fatalities week-over-week, according to IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike.

Over the last 24 hours, Illinois officials say that 17,230 new test results were confirmed by state labs, bringing the statewide total to 786,794 tests.

The state's positivity rate for the last week averaged 9.2 percent as of Tuesday.

More Than 2,500 New Coronavirus Cases Reported in Illinois Sunday

Health officials in Illinois have reported more than 2,500 new cases of coronavirus, along with 67 additional deaths Sunday.

According to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health, 2,508 new cases of the virus were confirmed over the last 24 hours, bringing the statewide total to 110,304 cases.

Sunday's 67 additional deaths bring the state's death toll to 4,856 people since the pandemic began.

Illinois Reports 2,352 New Coronavirus Cases, 75 Additional Deaths

Illinois health officials reported 2,352 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, bringing the state's total to 107,796 cases since the pandemic began.

An additional 75 deaths were also attributed to the virus, bringing the statewide total to 4,790, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Despite the increasing numbers of deaths and new cases, Illinois health officials say that the state's positivity rate, or rate of individuals whose coronavirus tests come back positive, is continuing to decline.

2,758 New Coronavirus Cases Reported in Illinois

An additional 2,758 coronavirus cases were reported in Illinois on May 22, with much of the state on track to enter phase three of the state's reopening plan in one week.

The new cases lift the statewide total 105,444.

Health officials also confirmed 110 additional deaths in the last 24 hours. The state's death toll is now at 4,715, according to data released by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Testing statewide neared 700,000 since the state began conducting coronavirus tests, health officials reported.

A total of 3,928 coronavirus patients remained hospitalized as of Thursday evening with 1,060 of those individuals in intensive care units and 589 on ventilators.

2,268 New Coronavirus Cases Reported in Illinois

Illinois marked a single-day record for coronavirus testing on May 21 as an additional 2,268 coronavirus cases were reported statewide, bringing the state's total number of cases to 102,686.

Health officials also confirmed 87 additional deaths in the last 24 hours. The state's death toll is now at 4,607, according to data released by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

One day earlier, Illinois surpassed the threshold of 100,000 cases as state health officials reported an additional 2,388 individuals who contracted the virus.

Over the last 24 hours, 29,307 test results have been returned, setting a single-day testing record, IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said. The total number of tests conducted since the pandemic began sits at 672,020 as of Thursday.

Illinois Coronavirus Cases Surpass 100,000 as State Reports 2,388 New Infections

Illinois health officials reported 2,388 new cases of coronavirus Wednesday, lifting the statewide total over 100,000.

Currently, the state's total number of confirmed coronavirus cases since the pandemic began sits at 100,418.

Health officials also reported 147 additional deaths in the last 24 hours. The state's death toll is now at 4,525, according to data released by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Over the last 24 hours, 21,029 test results have been returned, with 11.4 percent of tests coming back positive. The total number of tests conducted since the pandemic began now sits at 642,713 as of Wednesday.

The increase comes at the same time the state reported a decrease in hospitalizations related to COVID-19.

As of Wednesday, 3,914 people were hospitalized, with 1,005 in intensive care units. A total of 554 patients were on ventilators.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said those were the lowest hospitalization numbers since the state began capturing such data.

1,545 New Coronavirus Cases, 146 Additional Deaths Reported in Illinois

Illinois health officials reported 1,545 new cases of coronavirus on May 19, with 146 additional deaths related to the virus.

That lifts the state's total number of confirmed infections so far to 98,030. The state's death toll is now at 4,379, according to data released by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Over the last 24 hours, 18,443 test results have been returned, with 8.4 percent of tests coming back positive. The total number of tests conducted since the pandemic began now sits at 621,684 as of Tuesday.

Illinois Coronavirus Cases Surpass 95,000 With 2,294 New Cases Reported

Illinois health officials reported 2,294 new cases of coronavirus May 18, with 59 additional deaths related to the virus.

That lifts the state's total number of confirmed infections so far to 96,485. The state's death toll is now at 4,234, according to data released by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Monday marks the third day in a row with fewer than 100 fatalities reported.

2,432 New Coronavirus Cases Reported in Illinois as Total Inches Closer to 100,000

With Illinois nearly two weeks away from the end of its stay-at-home order, the state reported another increase in cases and deaths.

According to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the state saw another 2,432 cases confirmed in the last 24 hours. There were also an additional 130 deaths.

That brings the statewide totals to 90,369 cases and 4,058 deaths as of May 15.

According to officials, Illinois returned 26,565 test results in the last day. That lifts the state's total number of tests performed to 538,602 as of May 15. That brings Illinois' positivity rate to 16%, marking another decline for the state.

Data showed 4,367 people remained hospitalized. Of those, 1,129 people were in intensive care units and 675 were on ventilators.

3,239 New Coronavirus Cases, 138 Additional Deaths Reported in Illinois

One day after Illinois saw its deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic so far, the state reported an additional 138 deaths.

The state also saw 3,239 new confirmed cases of the virus, lifting statewide totals to 87,937 cases and 3,928 deaths.

According to officials, Illinois returned 22,678 test results in the last day. That brings the state's total number of tests performed to 512,037 as of Thursday and brings the statewide positivity rate to 17 percent.

As of Thursday, 1,132 people were in intensive care units and 689 were on ventilators.

Illinois Records Its Deadliest Day of Coronavirus Pandemic So Far

Illinois officials reported nearly 200 deaths in 24 hours Wednesday, marking the deadliest day on record for the state since the coronavirus pandemic began.

The state recorded 192 additional deaths since Tuesday's data was announced. That lifts the statewide death toll for the pandemic to 3,792.

"This is the largest one-day increase that we have reported thus far," said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike.

Illinois also confirmed 1,677 new cases of coronavirus Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections for the pandemic so far to 84,698.

Illinois Sees Record Number of Coronavirus Cases in a Single Day as Total Tops 80,000

Illinois officials reported 4,014 new cases of coronavirus Tuesday, a single-day record for the state that lifted the total number of cases over 80,000.

As of Tuesday, the state reported 83,021 confirmed infections since the pandemic began.

Health officials also reported an additional 144 fatalities, which bring the state's death toll to 3,601.

The latest rise in cases comes as the state also reported a record number of daily tests.

According to officials, Illinois returned 29,266 test results in the last 24 hours. That brings the state's total number of tests performed to 471,691 as of Tuesday.

That drops the state's positivity rate to 17.6 percent. The positivity rate has been declining across Illinois since spiking at a high of 21.36 percent on April 22.

Of those infected with coronavirus, 4,626 remained in the hospital as of Tuesday, with 1,215 in intensive care units and 730 on ventilators.

Illinois Coronavirus Cases Climb Near 80,000 as Deaths Reach 3,459

Illinois officials reported 1,266 new cases of coronavirus Monday, lifting the statewide total to near 80,000.

As of Monday, the state reported 79,007 confirmed infections since the pandemic first began.

Health officials also reported an additional 54 fatalities, which bring the state's death toll to 3,459.

According to officials, the state returned 12,441 test results Monday, with a positivity rate of just over 10 percent, the lowest single day rate since March 27. That number brings the state's total number of tests performed to 442,425, with a 17.86 percent positivity rate overall, the lowest rate since April 2.

That rate has been declining since spiking to a high of 21.36 percent on April 22.

Illinois Reports 1,656 New Cases of Coronavirus, 57 Additional Deaths

Illinois officials reported 1,656 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, along with 57 additional deaths as a result of the virus.

In all, Illinois has now reported 77,741 cases of the virus since the pandemic began, according to figures available from the state's Department of Public Health.

Sunday's additional deaths bring the state's death toll to 3,406.

More Than 2,300 New Coronavirus Cases Reported With 111 Additional Death

More than 2,300 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in the state of Illinois in the last 24 hours, along with 111 additional deaths, state officials said Saturday.

With the new test results, more than 76,000 people statewide have been diagnosed with the virus since the pandemic began, according to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health. A total of 76,085 people have tested positive for the virus.

The state’s new death toll stands at 3,349, according to the IDPH.

2,887 New Coronavirus Cases Lift Illinois Total to 73,760 as State Nears 400K Test

As Illinois prepares to enter its seventh week under a stay-at-home order, state health officials reported 2,887 new coronavirus cases and 130 additional deaths Friday.

The total number of cases reported now sits at 73,760, with 3,241 fatalities.

So far, the state has administered nearly 400,000 tests, with more than 20,000 conducted in the last day.

As of Friday, 4,750 coronavirus patients remained hospitalized, with 25 percent of those in intensive care units and 727 people on ventilators.

Illinois' Coronavirus Deaths Rise Above 3,000 as Cases Top 70,000, Health Officials Say

The number of fatalities associated with coronavirus reached a bleak milestone in Illinois Thursday.

The total number of cases reported now sits at 70,873, with 3,111 fatalities as of Thursday. That's an increase of 2,641 cases and 138 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the state health department.

So far, the state has administered nearly 400,000 tests, with more than 17,000 conducted in the last day. The positivity rate for Thursday, sat at around 15 percent, health officials said.

2,270 New Coronavirus Cases, 136 Additional Deaths Reported in Illinois

One day after Illinois saw its deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic so far, the state reported another 136 deaths and 2,270 confirmed cases.

As of May 6, the state's death toll from the virus neared 3,000 with 68,232 total cases. Of the total cases in Illinois, 4,832 individuals remained hospitalized, with 1,231 in intensive care and 780 on ventilators.

In the last 24 hours, nearly 15,000 tests were administered, bringing the total number of tests statewide to 361,260. That dropped the state's positivity rate below 19 percent Wednesday.

The number close to numbers seen Tuesday, which saw the state's highest amount of deaths in a single day since the coronavirus pandemic began. On that day, 144 deaths were reported in 24 hours.

The additional cases and deaths come as officials believe Illinois is near a peak.

As of Thursday, nearly 5,000 people remained hospitalized for coronavirus. Of the 4,953 in hospitals, 1,289 were in the intensive care unit and 785 were on ventilators.

Illinois' Coronavirus Count Tops 50,000 After 2,253 New Cases Reported

Illinois Reports Highest Number of Deaths in a Single Day Since Pandemic Began

Illinois' death toll rose the highest amount in a single day since the coronavirus pandemic began, with 144 deaths reported in 24 hours, lifting the total number of fatalities associated with the virus above 2,000 as of April 28.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the death toll from the virus sat at 2,125. Eighty percent of the most recent deaths were reported in northern Illinois, health officials said.

Illinois Reports Highest Amount of Daily Coronavirus Cases as State Count Nears 40K

Illinois' total number of coronavirus cases climbed to near 40,000 April 24 as the state saw its highest number of new daily cases related to the virus.

The state reported 2,724 new cases since Thursday.

As Illinois prepares to enter its fourth week of a stay-at-home order, the state saw its highest single-day spike in cases of the pandemic so far.

As of April 17, the total number of cases sat at 27,575, an increase of 1,842 in the last 24 hours. An additional 62 deaths were also reported, bring the statewide death toll to 1,134.

The news comes one after Illinois saw its deadliest day of the coronavirus crisis so far.

125 Coronavirus Deaths Reported in 24 Hours in Illinois, Highest Daily Toll Since Pandemic Began

Illinois reported 125 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours - the state's highest daily toll since the pandemic began - as fatalities associated with the virus top 1,000, officials said April 16.

With the state preparing to enter its fourth week of a stay-at-home order, the total number of cases reached 25,733. That marks an increase of 1,140 cases from one day earlier.

A total of 380 Illinois residents have now died after contracting the virus, according to statistics provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

More than 1,280 new cases of the virus were reported on Tuesday, bringing the state's total to 13,549 since the pandemic began.

Illinois Reports More Than 1,000 New Coronavirus Cases, 33 Additional Deaths

The state of Illinois has reported more than 1,000 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, bringing the state's total number of cases to 12,262 since the pandemic began.

In addition, the state has reported 33 additional deaths, bringing the state's total number of fatalities to 307 as a result of COVID-19.

Nearly 900 New Coronavirus Cases Reported in Illinois

A day after more than 1,400 cases were reported statewide, Illinois reported a total of 899 new cases of coronavirus on April 5.

In all, 11,256 people have been diagnosed with the disease since the pandemic began. A total of 71 counties are now reporting cases of the virus, with three more counties reporting their first cases on Sunday.

The state also confirmed 31 additional deaths as a result of the virus. 19 of those deaths occurred in Cook County, with DuPage, Kane, Kankakee, Lake and Will counties also reporting deaths.

More Than 10,000 Coronavirus Cases Now Confirmed in Illinois After Another Large Spike in Positive Tests

With 1,453 additional cases of coronavirus reported April 4, the state of Illinois has now exceeded 10,000 confirmed cases of the virus since the pandemic began.

In all, 10,357 people have contracted the virus in Illinois. 68 of the state's 102 counties have reported positive tests.

The state also confirmed 33 additional deaths on Saturday, bringing the statewide total to 243 since the pandemic began.

Illinois Sees Biggest Single-Day Spike Since Coronavirus Pandemic Began

Illinois saw its biggest single-day spike since the coronavirus pandemic began Friday, with 1,209 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

That brings the total number of confirmed infections to 8,904 on April 3, health officials announced, with 210 total deaths. The deaths, which were reported in seven Illinois counties, mark an increase of 53 fatalities in the last day.

With 715 New Cases, Illinois' Coronavirus Total Reaches 7,695 With 157 Deaths

With another 715 cases of coronavirus cases in Illinois, the state's total number of confirmed diagnoses rose to 7,695 on April 2, health officials announced.

Meanwhile, an additional 16 deaths in the last 24 hours lifted the total number of fatalities to 157.

Chicago Police Officer Dies From COVID-19

A Chicago police officer has died after being diagnosed with COVID-19, officials announced April 2. Marco Di Franco, 50, was a highly-decorated 21-year veteran of the force who worked in the narcotics division, CPD said. He contracted the virus the week prior and was hospitalized the weekend before his death.

He is survived by his wife and two children, ages 7 and 10. The death marks a first in the department, which as of April 1 reported more than 60 confirmed cases citywide.

167 Cook County Jail Detainees Have Tested Positive for COVID-19, Officials Say

The Cook County sheriff’s office announced Wednesday that 26 more detainees at Cook County Jail have tested positive for COVID-19, raising the number of confirmed cases among detainees to 167.

Twelve detainees diagnosed with the disease have been hospitalized, the sheriff’s office said. Additionally, 34 staff members have also tested positive.

First Officer of Joliet Police Department Tests Positive for COVID-19

An officer of the Joliet Police Department has contracted the coronavirus — the first employee of the department to test positive for the disease.

The officer works in the department’s investigation division and began showing symptoms last week, Joliet interim City Manager Steve Jones said Wednesday in a statement.

The officer, who was tested at the Joliet Walmart drive-thru test site, is “doing fine” and recovering at home, Jones said. The department is disinfecting the officer’s work area.

Metra Conductor Tests Positive for the Coronavirus

A conductor who works on the Metra SouthWest Service Line has tested positive for COVID-19, the commuter rail service announced Wednesday.

The employee has been home since becoming sick March 25, Metra said in a statement.

Coronavirus Deaths Top 100 in Illinois as Total Cases Rise to Nearly 7K

The number of coronavirus deaths in Illinois hit a grim milestone Wednesday, topping 100 as confirmed cases across the state grew by nearly 1,000.

The now 6,980 cases marks a spike of 986 confirmed results and 42 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Illinois' total number of fatalities now sit at 141.

Additional deaths were reported in Carroll, Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Sangamon, Will and Winnebago counties.

City of Chicago Employee Dies From COVID-19, Mayor Announces

Lightfoot declined to offer any information about the employee, but the death marks the latest fatality in what has been the epicenter of Illinois' coronavirus outbreak.

Coronavirus Cases Spike to Nearly 6K, with 99 Deaths

Illinois' confirmed coronavirus cases now total nearly 6,000 with close to 100 fatalities as the state extends its stay-at-home order through the end of April.

The total number of cases - 5,994 - marks a spike of 937 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Across the state, 99 fatalities have been associated with the virus, an increase of 26 from one day earlier. Additional deaths were reported in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McLean, Morgan, St. Clair and Will counties.

Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Employee Tests Positive for COVID-19

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office Monday announced its first case of an employee who was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The employee works at the Cook County Domestic Violence Court Building, 555 W. Harrison St., the state’s attorney’s office said in a statement. They last reported to work March 24.

Officials are tracking down anyone who may have been in contact with the employee over the last two weeks, the state’s attorney’s office said.

134 Detainees at Cook County Jail Confirmed Positive for COVID-19

The Cook County sheriff’s office announced Monday that 33 more detainees at the Cook County Jail have tested positive for coronavirus, raising the total number of confirmed cases among detainees to 134.

Nine detainees have tested negative, and 20 staff members have also tested positive, the sheriff’s office said.

The jail has already released at least 400 detainees over the last week, as Cook County judges conduct case-by-case bond reviews in an attempt to lower the jail’s population and reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

Coronavirus Cases in Illinois Top 5,000 With 73 Fatalities

One day after Illinois saw its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus cases since the pandemic began, the state reported yet another climb, topping 5,000 confirmed diagnoses on Monday.

A total of 5,057 coronavirus cases have now been confirmed, along with 73 deaths, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. That marks an increase of 461 cases.

The newly-reported deaths included four people in their 60s and 70s in Cook County, a DuPage County man in his 60s, a Kendall County woman in her 60s and two Will County men in their 50s and 60s. Among those cases was a man incarcerated at Stateville Correctional Center, health officials said.

With the newly confirmed cases, more than 50 of the state's 102 counties have now reported at least one confirmed case of the virus.

Clark, Crawford, Marion, Randolph and Saline counties all reported their first cases of the virus Monday.

1,105 New Coronavirus Cases in Illinois, Bringing State Total to 4,596

Illinois saw its biggest one-day jump in coronavirus cases since the pandemic began, with 1,105 new cases confirmed on Sunday.

A total of 4,596 coronavirus cases have now been confirmed statewide in 47 counties.

In addition, 18 more deaths have been reported in connection to the virus, bringing the state's total number of coronavirus-related fatalities to 65.

Whole Foods Employee at Chicago Store Tests Positive for Coronavirus

An employee at the Whole Foods Sauganash location on the North Side has tested positive for the coronavirus, a spokesman confirmed Sunday.

The employee, who works at 6020 N. Cicero Ave., is in quarantine, according to the Whole Foods spokesman, who declined to provide further information “out of respect for the privacy of our Team Members.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, the store performed an additional cleaning and disinfection, on top of our current enhanced sanitation measures,” the spokesman said.

First US Infant Death, 465 New Cases Reported in Illinois

An additional 465 coronavirus cases were reported in Illinois on Saturday, including the death of an infant and 12 others, bringing the statewide total to 3,491.

The death of the infant, who lived in Cook County, was the first reported in the United States, state officials said.

Among counties reporting their first cases Saturday were Carroll, Fayette and Macon, increasing the number of counties reporting cases to 43.

In all, a total of 47 people have died from the coronavirus in Illinois.

488 New Coronavirus Cases Lift Illinois Total Over 3K With 34 Deaths

Illinois saw an increase of 488 coronavirus cases overnight, lifting the state total to 3,026 with 34 deaths as health experts warn the virus could soon consume Illinois and its hospitals.

The cases have been reported in more than three dozen counties across the state and patients range in age from less than 1 year old to 99 years old. Among counties reporting their first cases Friday were Bureau, Henry and Iroquois.

The state reported seven new deaths over the last day, including a man in his 50s, two men and two women in their 60s, a man in his 70s and a woman in her 90s.

At least 1,535 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in Illinois, marking an increase of 250 in the last 24 hours, including four new deaths, health officials said Tuesday.

The four new deaths, which lift the state to a total of 16 fatalities associated with the virus, include a Chicago man in his 50s, two Cook County residents in their 60s and a DuPage County resident in her 90s.

Mundelein Mayor Announces He Tested Positive for Coronavirus

The mayor of north suburban Mundelein has reportedly announced that he tested positive for coronavirus.

Mayor Steve Lentz made a statement about his diagnosis during a virtual village board meeting on Monday, according to the Daily Herald.

Lentz told the Herald he was experiencing "mild symptoms" and his wife also tested positive for the virus, but they were optimistic about recovery.

236 New Coronavirus Cases in Illinois, Bringing Statewide Total to 1,285

An additional 236 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported in Illinois, along with three additional deaths, health officials said Monday, increasing the statewide case total to 1,285 in 31 counties.

The three new deaths, which lift the state to 12 fatalities total associated with COVID-19, were reported in Cook County and included two men in their 80s and a man in his 90s.

296 New Coronavirus Cases in Illinois, Bringing Total to 1,049

Nearly 300 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the state of Illinois Sunday, pushing the state past 1,000 confirmed cases.

Three additional deaths were also reported by state health officials, who cautioned that numbers will likely continue to get worse in coming days.

168 New Coronavirus Cases in Illinois, Bringing Total to 753

An additional 168 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported in Illinois, health officials said Saturday, increasing the statewide total to 753.

The news comes as the state also reported one more death associated with the virus, bringing the total number of deaths to six. The newly-reported death is a Cook County man in his 70s, health officials said.

163 New Coronavirus Cases in Illinois, Bringing Total to 585

An additional 163 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported in Illinois, health officials said Friday, increasing the statewide total to 585.

The news comes as the state also reported one more death associated with the virus, bringing the total of deaths associated with the virus to five. The newly-reported death is a Cook County woman in her 70s, health officials said.

As of Friday afternoon, patients ranging in age from 3 to 99 years old, have been reported in 25 counties.

134 New Coronavirus Cases Bring Illinois Total to 422; 4 Total Fatalities

At least 134 new confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported in Illinois, health officials said Thursday, lifting the state total to 422 as health officials warn that number will continue to rise "exponentially."

The news comes as the state also reported four fatalities associated with the virus and the state's health department said they anticipate additional deaths.

Statewide, the confirmed cases include people between the ages of 9 and 91 in at least 22 counties.

Chicago Police Department Confirms Case of COVID-19

A member of the Chicago Police Department has tested positive for COVID-19, the department announced Thursday.

Few details were released about the case, but spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the person will remain at home until medically cleared.

The department is working with the Chicago Department of Public Health to identify potential contacts who may have interacted with the person.

2 ER Doctors at Rush Oak Park Hospital Test Positive for Coronavirus

Two emergency room doctors at Rush Oak Park Hospital tested positive for the coronavirus and are now quarantined at home, a spokesman for the hospital system said March 19.

"One doctor has not been seeing patients for several days prior, when he would have been contagious," the hospital's statement said. "The other may have had patient and peer contact and we are assessing the overall risk of exposure, working with the Illinois Department of Public Health and advising patients and peers as appropriate."

The hospital said it was likely the doctors' cases of the coronavirus were community transmitted, adding that all 12,000 people who work throughout the Rush Health System were trained on infection protection protocols like handwashing, gowning, masking and more.

Lake Forest and Lake Bluff Report 1st Cases of COVID-19

Lake Forest officials say a local resident has tested positive for coronavirus. In addition, a Lake Bluff resident identified himself to officials and said he had tested positive as well.

As of March 19, Lake County said there were 22 cases and the virus was "actively spreading in our community."

It remains unclear if the two residents were part of the recently announced cases that lifted the state total to 288.

2 Chicago Fire Department Members Test Positive for Coronavirus, Officials Say

Two members of the Chicago Fire Department have tested positive for coronavirus, fire officials announced March 18.

The CFD was alerted to the latest case by a “local health care facility,” and the member is being treated at a hospital, according to CFD spokesman Larry Langford. Those in close contact were advised to self-quarantine as a precaution.

Langford confirmed that the member is on “the EMS side of things,” but declined to disclose their rank. However, he also said that officials believe the person did not pick up the virus while on the job.

On March 17, health officials said a CFD paramedic was diagnosed with coronavirus and is now in quarantine at home.

2 North Side Condo Residents Test Positive for Coronavirus

Two residents inside of a North Side condo building have been diagnosed with coronavirus, leaving more than 200 other residents fearing that they could be next. The positive tests were reported March 15 and March 17.

128 New Coronavirus Cases Bring Illinois Total to 288

At least 128 new confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported in Illinois, health officials said March 18, lifting the state total to 288 cases in 17 counties.

The new number includes an additional 20 at a long-term care facility in DuPage County, which now has a total of 42 cases. Thirty of those cases were confirmed in residents at the facility while another 12 were in staff.

Statewide, the cases include people between the ages of 9 and 91.

Both Kendall and Madison counties in Illinois reported their first cases in the newest group.

Evanston Retirement Community Reports 2 Cases

Three Crowns Park in Evanston says two residents of its McDaniel House have tested positive for COVID-19. It remains unclear if these cases are already counted in the statewide total of 160 being reported by Illinois health officials and the governor.

The facility has limited visitation to "essential medical visitors" only. It is delivering meals to residents and all group activities have been canceled,

Lake County Health Department Reports 6 New Cases

The Lake County Health Department is reporting six new cases of the coronavirus in the county, including evidence of community transmission. It remains unclear if these cases are already counted in the statewide total of 160 being reported by Illinois health officials and the governor.

The update brings the total number of confirmed cases in the county to 14.

“We are asking residents with only mild symptoms to stay home, distance yourself from others in the household, if possible, by staying in a separate bedroom and bathroom, and contact your doctor if your symptoms worsen,” Dr. Sana Ahmed, medical epidemiologist at the health department, said in a statement. “We are prioritizing testing for symptomatic people who have high risk of complications—older adults living in congregate settings and those with chronic health conditions like heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes, and those with weakened immune systems.”

DePaul Faculty Member Tests Positive for COVID-19

A DePaul University faculty member has tested positive for coronavirus, the university announced March 18.

It remains unclear if the faculty member is among the 55 new confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in Illinois March 17. 

The faculty member was last at the Chicago school's building at 1150 W. Fullerton Ave. on Sunday with another person not associated with the school who also tested positive for the virus.

"For precautions and the safety of the community the building at 1150 W. Fullerton Ave., including the Chicago Public Library branch and AMITA Sage Medical, will close today, March 18, to allow for cleaning," the university said in a statement.

55 New Coronavirus Cases Bring Illinois Total to 160 in 15 Counties

On Tuesday, Illinois officials confirmed the first fatality during the coronavirus pandemic. 61-year-old Patricia Frieson, who resided in the 8300 block of South Throop Avenue in Chicago, was pronounced dead on March 16 at the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Frieson had tested positive for COVID-19. A records review will be conducted Wednesday to determine the official cause and manner of death, according to the office.

Fifty-five new confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported in Illinois, health officials said March 17, lifting the state total to 160 cases in 15 counties.

Among them are 22 at a DuPage County long-term care facility, the same location where a woman had tested positive over the weekend. The new cases at the facility include 18 residents and four staff members, all of whom are in isolation, officials said.

12 New Coronavirus Cases in Illinois, Total Now at 105

An additional 12 coronavirus cases were reported in Illinois March 16, bringing the total statewide to 105.

Both Peoria and Will counties reported cases for the first time, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Additional cases were reported in the City of Chicago as well as Champaign, Clinton, Cook, Cumberland, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, Sangamon, St. Clair, Whiteside, Winnebago and Woodford counties.   

93 Total Confirmed Cases as of Sunday

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced 29 new coronavirus cases March 15, increasing the total number in the state to 93.

The five following counties reported cases for the first time: Champaign, Clinton, Sangamon, Whiteside, and Winnebago counties.

Other areas with cases include Chicago and Cook, Cumberland, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, St. Clair, and Woodford counties.   

Meanwhile, two Chicago schools revealed members have tested positive for the virus, though it remains unclear if they are part of the recently announced cases.

Chicago's Sheridan Math and Science Academy was closed March 16 but Chicago Public Schools CEO Janice Jackson didn't specify whether the person who contracted the coronavirus is a student, staff member or faculty member.

Similiarly, Noble Charter Schools announced Sunday that a Mansueto staff member tested positive for the virus and all 19 schools in the district would be closed Monday.

The district said the staff member was on the Mansueto campus between March 4 and March 13. Anyone who was in the building during that time should not go to work or school and should avoid public places, the district said.

Though the staff member was not identified, the district said the person would be reaching out to contacts directly.

20 Additional Cases Reported Saturday, Total Now at 66

An additional 20 coronavirus cases were announced March 14 in Illinois, bringing the total to 66.

Eighteen of the cases were reported by state health officials at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

One of the new cases reported Saturday is a woman in her 60s who resides at a long-term care facility in DuPage County, health officials said.

Seven new cases were also reported in Chicago, as well as four in suburban Cook County, one in Kane County and one in Lake County, according to a news release. Two cases were announced in St. Clair County along with one case each in Cumberland County and Woodford County.

Also on Saturday, downstate health officials revealed that two patients contracted the coronavirus in Sangamon County. One of the patients was said to be critically ill and in intensive care at a hospital. The second patient was tested at an outpatient facility, officials said.

14 New Cases of Coronavirus Confirmed in Illinois, Bringing the Total to 46

An additional 14 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Illinois, health officials said March 13, bringing the state's total to 46.

Of the 14 new cases, nine are in Chicago, four are in Cook County and one is in Lake County, Illinois health officials said. The ages range from the 20s to the 90s.

"Public health officials are still investigating the travel history of these individuals and any potential contact with a known COVID-19 case," according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Around the same time, Northwestern University announced that an employee on its Evanston campus tested positive for the virus. It remains unclear if the employee was one of the cases announced by officials Friday.

The university said the employee is in self-isolation off-campus and the school is working to reach out to any students or faculty who may have had direct contact with the employee.

"We understand that this announcement will cause concern, particularly with final exams about to begin," the university said in a statement. "As the University said in a message earlier today, students are not required to attend in-person exams. Faculty and students will receive more information about the options for completing their Winter Quarter exams."

7 New Cases of Coronavirus Confirmed in Illinois, Boosting State to 32

Health officials said they are still investigating the travel histories of the newest cases and any potential contacts.

"The young child in Chicago is a reminder that anyone can be infected with this virus," IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said.

Health officials noted there are no deaths associated with coronavirus in Illinois so far and that the child is in good condition at home.

"He did not even need to go into the hospital," said Chicago Department of Public Health Director Dr. Allison Arwady.

6 New Cases of Coronavirus Confirmed in Illinois, Lifting State to 25

Illinois has six new confirmed cases of coronavirus, health officials announced March 11, bringing the state's total to 25.

The majority of the new cases were reported in Chicago and Cook County, though a Lake County man in his 50s was also diagnosed, health officials said. The Cook County cases include:

  • A man in his 80s
  • 2 men in their 70s
  • A woman in her 50s
  • A man in his 40s

Health officials said they are investigating the new cases' travel histories, exposures and close contacts.

The Lake County Health Department confirmed that the resident in his 50s was in stable condition.

“Our staff is working to rapidly identify, interview and assess the risk for close contacts of the first COVID-19 case in Lake County,” said Lisa Kritz, Director of Prevention for the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center. “Our priority is the health and safety of all who live, work, and play in Lake County, and we continue to use every available resource to prepare our communities for additional cases of COVID-19.”

All new cases are in isolation, either at home or in an area hospital.

"With these new cases, we are seeing more spread in our community, and again I echo the governor's comments that we need to be mindful if anyone is experiencing symptoms, has been in contact with any of these cases that they should notify their provider," Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said.

8 New Cases Bring State's Total to 19

Eight additional coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Illinois, bringing the state's total to 19, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced March 11.

Two of the eight cases are outside of Cook County, including one with ties to Lake and McHenry Counties and one in Kane County, health officials said.

The cases include a teenage resident of McHenry County and a woman in her 60s from Kane County.

The two cases outside of Cook County may be cases of community spread, health officials said, warning that "we're likely to see additional cases each day forward."

"Neither have a travel history to affected countries or close contact with a known COVID-19 case based on our preliminary investigations, but the investigations are still ongoing," said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Two other cases were reported in Chicago and involved two men in their 40s.

Two of the newest cases are patients at Northwest Community Healthcare in Arlington Heights, which had earlier treated a husband and wife who became the state's third and fourth confirmed coronavirus cases.

"Both patients are not related to previously identified COVID-19 patients who received care at NCH," the hospital said in a statement. "The new cases both appear to be travel-related contractions of the virus and are completely independent of one another."

The cases were all said to be in stable condition and in isolation.

4 New Cases Anounced in Chicago Amid Disaster Proclamation

Four new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Illinois, as Gov. J.B. Pritzker declared a disaster proclamation over the outbreak.

The new cases involve two women in their 50s and 70s who are relatives of a Chicago Public Schools aide diagnosed on March 6. The women are not connected to the school the aide worked at, however, health officials said.

The third case is a woman in her 50s, who is from California but traveled to Illinois. The fourth case is a woman in her 70s who returned earlier this month from an Egyptian cruise linked to COVID-19 cases.

All four women were in good condition and in isolation, health officials said.

Cinespace in Chicago said it was informed Monday evening by FOX that a crew member from the show "neXt" tested positive for the virus. It remains unclear who the person is or if they are among the four recent cases, but FOX executives and other tenants at Cinespace "have confirmed they are currently disinfecting all production offices and stages."

"The health and safety of our staff and tenants are of the utmost importance," Cinespace said in a statement. "Cinespace is fully adhering to the city of Chicago health directives issued last week. We distributed these directives to all film/television production tenants and all Cinespace employees. We remain at the service of both our City and our tenants. We are committed to implementing any and all mitigation measures deemed necessary going forward.  We are inquiring with FOX as to whom to direct further questions regarding the matter."

Chicago Man Tests Positive in 7th Coronavirus Case in Illinois

Most recently, a Chicago man who was diagnosed with coronavirus became what is believed to be the first community-transmitted case of the virus in the city.

The resident, a man in his 60s, is currently hospitalized and is in serious condition, according to health officials.

Officials say that the man has not traveled to any countries impacted by coronavirus, and that he has no connection to any other existing cases.

Chicago Public Schools extended the closure of Vaughn Occupational High School after learning new information about a teacher's aide who was diagnosed with the coronavirus. NBC 5's Chris Hush reports.

CPS Aide Becomes 6th to Test Positive for Coronavirus

A Chicago Public Schools aide has been diagnosed with the coronavirus, state and local officials said at a news conference March 6.

The patient — a Chicago resident in her 50s — is a special education classroom assistant at Vaughn Occupation High School on Chicago's North Side, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.

The woman, who was hospitalized in stable condition, recently disembarked from the Grand Princess cruise ship in California, where 21 people on board tested positive for the coronavirus.

After returning home, the patient went to her job at Vaughn Occupational High School, a specialty school for students with special needs and disabilities. The unidentified employee reported to Vaughn the week of Feb. 25, and was last present at work on March 2.

CPS Supt. Janice Jackson announced classes at the school will be canceled while the investigation continues.

5th Case Confirmed in Man Who Flew to O’Hare After Travel to Italy

A man who flew to Chicago's O'Hare Airport this month after traveling to Italy has tested positive for coronavirus in Illinois, state health officials announced March 5.

The patient is a "Cook County resident in his 20s" the Illinois Department of Public Health and Cook County Department of Public Health said in a statement.

The patient, a junior at Vanderbilt University, was treated at Rush University Medical Center. He told NBC 5 he had been studying abroad in Italy when the outbreak hit and the students in his program were recalled to the U.S.

Illinois’ fifth patient who tested positive for the coronavirus said in an interview Thursday that he’s feeling “a lot better” and doesn’t want anyone to be alarmed by the diagnosis. Lauren Petty reports.

Husband and Wife Become 3rd and 4th Coronavirus Case in Illinois

Among the cases were a woman in her 70s and her spouse, a man in his 70s, who tested positive in a Chicago suburb, the Illinois Department of Public Health said in a release.

Health officials said both patients were in "good condition" and in isolation at their home. The man was previously being treated at Northwest Community Healthcare in Arlington Heights.

Authorities say they have not yet determined how the pair contracted the virus, believing it may be a case of community transmission.

The husband and wife have not been identified and additional details weren't immediately available.

Public health officials said they're working to identify and actively monitor individuals who were in contact with the patients in an effort to reduce the risk of additional transmission.

Woman Who Returned to Chicago From China Becomes 1st Coronavirus Case; Her Husband is 2nd

In January, two Chicago residents, a husband and wife, were diagnosed with the coronavirus. The wife had recently traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak, to care for a relative.

Tom Panocha and his wife were treated at AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates and have since made a full recovery.

In an exclusive interview with “NBC Nightly News,” Panocha said the virus didn’t affect him much, adding that it was less strenuous on his body than the flu.

Other Cases With Chicago-Area Ties

A Missouri woman who recently tested positive for coronavirus took an Amtrak train from Chicago to St. Louis after returning from a study abroad trip to Italy, officials confirmed in a statement on March 8.

The 20-year-old woman, who is from St. Louis County, flew into Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on March 3 on a return trip from Italy, where she was studying, according to officials.

After staying the night in Chicago with a friend, the woman then got onto an Amtrak train bound for St. Louis on March 4.

According to St. Louis public radio, the woman called the St. Louis County coronavirus hotline on March 6 to report that she was experiencing a high fever and a cough. She then tested positive for coronavirus, making hers the first case of the virus in the St. Louis area.  

In a statement, Amtrak says that they are “working in close contact” with officials to determine their next steps.

Meanwhile, an employee of the Village of Glencoe in Chicago's north suburbs was under voluntary quarantine after being exposed to someone with a confirmed case of the coronavirus, the village announced in early March.

The individual in question is a Public Works Department employee, the village said in a statement that did not release any further identifying information.

The employee "was exposed to a different individual, who was subsequently confirmed to be infected with coronavirus," the statement said, but was not showing any signs of the virus and was self-monitoring under voluntary quarantine at home. The employee was also in contact with their healthcare professional, officials said.

The employee was at work earlier in the week after the initial exposure but had "minimal contact with the general public," according to the village.
