Students, administrators and staff at Mount Carmel High School on the city’s south side are mourning the loss of a student.

Sophomore William “Cody” Gibson, 15, of the 2900 block of S. King Dr. collapsed yesterday while playing basketball with friends at the YMCA on the 6400 block of South Harper Ave., reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

A Mount Carmel athletic trainer tried to revive Gibson, but was unsuccessful.  They were told he had a preexisting condition, possibly an enlarged heart.

Gibson was pronounced dead at 4:38 p.m. at Jackson Park Hospital.

Gibson was not a member of Mount Carmel’s basketball team, but Athletic Director Frank Linti told the Sun-Times the sophomore “always had a smile on his face.  When I did see him around the P.E. classes or gym he seemed likeable.”
