A South Chicago man was killed Sunday night and eight others were injured during a night of heightened temps and tempers.

Seems like a sure bet -- every time the weather heats up in Chicago, so do the number of shootings.

Leon Ordonez, 35, became a victim while barbecuing with friends in Washington Park at 5825 S. Russell Drive. At around 9 p.m. shots rang out and a bullet hit Ordonez in the armpit. He died less than a hour later at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, according to the Sun Times News Wire.

Investigators said there's no early evidence indicating Ordonez was the intended target.

In another incident, a 22-year-old man heard gunshots in the 8000 block of South Saginaw Avenue after 10 p.m. He said he felt a throbbing pain in his leg and looked down and saw he was shot. Police said he was transported to the hospital in good condition, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Three other men were shot at 8519 S. Hoyne Avenue at 11:20 p.m. Gresham District police said a gunman on foot shot at the group. Bullets hit a 24-year-old man in his left thigh and left buttocks, a 21-year-old man in his right hand and leg, and another 21-year-old in his right arm.  Police said the men are hospitalized in good condition with "non-life threatening injuries."

About 45 minutes later, another shooting took place about a block and a half away in the 8400 block of South Hamilton at 12:06 a.m. An assailant fired from a white SUV at a group standing on the corner, hitting a man in his right arm. The 27-year-old victim was listed in good condition, police said.

Investigators believe the shootings are connected because of the time and location. They're trying to figure out if second was in retaliation for the earlier one.

In Hyde Park, a 18-year-old man was shot in the leg near the Museum of Science and Industry at 5632 S. Lake Shore Dr. early Monday morning, according to police. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Another South Side shooting happened in Bronzeville in the 4100 block of South Indiana Avenue. A 25-year-old man was shot in the neck about 2:45 a.m. Police said the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition, the Chicago Tribune reports.

As of 4 a.m., no suspects were in custody.
