A giant Burmese python found Monday near the Lake Michigan shoreline in Waukegan has been euthanized.

A landscaper stumbled upon the full-grown snake while trimming bushes and picking up trash near the beach, city police said. The seasonal chill left the full-grown snake feeling lethargic, though, so it was captured without incident.

A curator of the Lake Forest Wildlife Discovery Center told the Lake County News Sun the python suffered open wounds, a respiratory problem and was malnourished from being outside for days.

The snake was euthanized Tuesday afternoon.

Police Lt. Edward Fitzgerald said the python likely was dumped in the area by someone who wanted to get rid of it.
