Squatter Makes $700,000 Home His Own

Until police arrested him and changed his address to jail

A $700,000 mansion in the suburbs wasn't empty for long after the bank foreclosed on it.

Police say 41-year old Steven Hathorne, formerly of Aurora, moved into a foreclosed home in Sugar Grove and lived there for eight months before his arrest this week.

WBBM radio reports that Hathorne is charged with stealing $1,400 worth of water from the village and with criminal damage to property.

Authorities say they suspected Hathorne was living in the house in the Prestbury subdivision illegally since last summer, but it took months to get permission from the mortgage company to enter the property.

Police say Hathorne told neighbors he was in the process of buying the house, but it looks like he bought himself a ticket to jail.
