Melissa McCarthy Filming New Movie in Chicago

Filming for the movie will continue through Wednesday

Don’t be surprised if you spot Melissa McCarthy in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood Tuesday—the award-winning actress and comedian will be in the neighborhood filming her new movie “Michelle Darnell.”

The filming involved transforming Matilda’s, “the most interesting corner tavern” at 3101 N. Sheffield Ave., and its club babyATLAS, into a Mexican restaurant named El Burrito Sabroso.

Filming for the movie will continue through Wednesday, with a “free Melissa McCarthy viewing on Tuesday," the venue announced.

The bar-turned-Mexican restaurant celebrated its new façade by offering $1 off all Mexican-themed items, including tacos burritos, margaritas and more Monday night.

Fans of Matilda’s were surprised when the popular bar began its transformation, with some taking to social media to express their disappointment.

“We saw this today and were bummed. And I said ‘I feel like a cheap Mexican restaurant doesn't really fit in in this area,’” one customer wrote on Matilda’s Facebook page. “So glad it's just for filming.”

But there was one hint that the new restaurant wasn’t there to stay—the phone number listed on the new awning read (312) 555-0126.

Michelle Darnell, a film about a woman imprisoned for insider trading attempting to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, features stars like Peter Dinklage, Kristen Schaal, Kristen Bell, and Chicago’s own Cecily Strong, according to IMDb.

It is reportedly the latest film McCarthy, a Plainfield native, has worked on with husband Ben Falcone.

Last month, 4 Star Casting announced it was looking for extras for the Michelle Darnell filming in Chicago. The casting call initially asked for candidates to play Major League Baseball Players. Later posts included actors and actresses of all ages to be pedestrians and White Sox fans.
