Nine people were injured when a fire broke out at a high-rise on Chicago's South Side, fire officials said.
Around 2 a.m., firefighters responded to a still and box fire on the 13th floor of a 21-story building in the 6400 block of South Lowe Avenue in the city's Englewood neighborhood, authorities said.
The fire was struck out by about 2:15 a.m., according to fire officials.
Eight residents of the building, including three children, sustained serious injuries and were taken to area hospitals, where they were listed in stable condition, according to 5th District Chief Rosalind Jones.
A firefighter was also treated for minor injuries and released, authorities said.
A total of 31 people were displaced from the building, according to Jones, who said the American Red Cross was assisting them.
The building was difficult to evacuate, as smoke filled the entire 13th floor and first responders had problems with the elevators, Jones said.
