Two abduction attempts on young girls on the same day prompted Chicago police this week of issue a safety alert.
The first attempt happened at about 8 a.m. Monday as a 10-year-old girl was walking to school on the 5100 block of South Kildare Avenue, 8th District police said in an alert.
In that instance, police said a man in a silver or grey SUV or van, which was parked across the street, tried to lure the girl into his vehicle, first by gesturing with his hand and then by offering the child candy.
The girl ran way and later told an adult about the incident. She described the man as a heavy-set Hispanic man between 40 and 50 years old, police said. The man was last seen wearing a grey knit winter hat, large prescription glasses, and a black coat.
In another incident, police said a man forced a 14-year-old girl into a gangway on the 2500 block of West Morse Avenue, on the city's north side. The attacker was scared off when a motion sensor light went on, police said.
In both cases, the girls were able to get away unharmed.
