New Report Reveals Top Dog Names for 2016

With National Dog Day just days away, petowners across the country will soon be celebrating man’s best friend. But it appears many of those best friends have something in common – their names.

Social media app Nextdoor released its annual report of top dog names across the country and by breed.

The top dog name in the U.S. this year was Bella, followed by Lucy, Max, Daisy and Buddy.

Buddy moved up on the list compared to last year, claiming the fifth spot on this year’s list. And Sadie jumped up to take over Maggie for the no. 9 slot.

When going be breed, Lucy was the top name for mixed-breed dogs, Maggie was the top for a lab, Bailey was most named for golden retrievers, Chico was common among Chihuahuas and Buddy was most common in dachshunds.

Boxers were commonly named Rocky, shih tzu’s were Gizmo, German shepherds and Yorkshire terriers were often named Max and beagles were commonly named Daisy.

Data for the list was compiled from Nextdoor member profiles that included pet information.

National Dog Day takes place Friday and is aimed at celebrating dogs of all breeds.

“Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort,” according to Nationaldogday.com.
