Rain made for a messy morning commute across the Chicago area early Monday.

The rainfall began overnight, staying heavy to moderate at times along with a few isolated embedded storms.

The spring showers brought the morning rush hour to a crawl in several areas, with hazardous conditions prompting drivers to drive more slowly than usual.

Some incidents were reported to cause delays on Chicago-area roads, like a crash on the inbound Bishop Ford at 103rd Street.

On the inbound Kennedy Expressway, travel times from O'Hare to downtown reached roughly 90 minutes, 50 minutes from Montrose in. Hopping in the express lanes saved some time, but just a bit, with that journey downtown clocking in at around 42 minutes.

The three left lanes of eastbound I-88 were blocked between Highland Avenue and Route 83 due to an accident, making for huge delays in the western suburbs.

A crash in the outbound Eisenhower Expressway lanes at York caused a backup, while another crash slowed things down on the inbound Dan Ryan at the exit ramp at Roosevelt Road.

The rain was expected to move east and end early Monday afternoon for a cool, damp and overcast day.

But don't put your umbrellas yet - more showers and isolated storms are likely Tuesday, particularly in the afternoon and evening, plus another round of rain during the Wednesday morning rush hour.
