The Chicago Cubs have been in the market for a slew of back-of-the-rotation pitchers this summer, and they’ve finally made their move on Friday as they acquired Dan Haren in a trade with the Miami Marlins.
In the deal, shortstop Elliott Soto and right-handed pitcher Ivan Pineyro head to the Marlins.
The deal, which was first reported by Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times and confirmed by Clark Spencer from the Miami Herald, gives the Cubs the starting pitcher that they’ve been looking for ever since Travis Wood and Tsuyoshi Wada failed to nail down the spot in their rotation.
Haren has started 21 games for the Marlins this season, sporting a 7-7 record with a 3.42 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 129 innings pitched. His ERA is down from his 2014 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and although his strikeout numbers are slightly down, he’s also giving up fewer hits to help compensate for his lack of swing-and-miss stuff.
Unfortunately for the Cubs, they won't be able to use Haren in the rotation until at least Tuesday, as he pitched for the Marlins on Thursday night.
