Dow Dives 297 On Euro Fears

The Dow closed down 297 points Tuesday after falling as low as 321 points on fears a European rescue of Greece will unravel. The latest financial aid deal struck by European leaders last week to avoid a "hard default" in Greece requires severe austerity measures that are unpopular in the country. Prime Minister George Papandreou, sensing he needs popular support to push the measures through, called for a risky referendum on the eurozone bailout, which his Cabinet backed late Tuesday. His government also faces a confidence vote in Parliament Friday. “This was completely unanticipated,” said investment strategist and economist John Canally. “This vote in Greece is going to hang over the market for next week or so, unfortunately.”
