Work to Begin on Bronzeville Lakefront Bridge

Bronzeville residents will soon have a new way to get to the lakefront.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Sen. Dick Durbin and Ald. Will Burns attended a ceremony Sunday to celebrate the beginning of construction of a new pedestrian bridge at 35th Street over Lake Shore Drive.

The S-shaped bridge replaces and older design that has fallen into disrepair.

The $23 million Chicago Department of Transportation project is supported by $18 million from the US Department of Transportation and $5 million from the State of Illinois, according to a news release.

The new bridge will be 20-feet-wide, and will accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.

The bridge is expected to open in October 2015.
