95-Year-Old Woman Dies After Vehicle Submerges in Aurora Pond

Officials said the car was submerged in about eight feet of water

A 95-year-old woman died Saturday after driving her vehicle into a pond Friday afternoon, Aurora police said on their Facebook page

Helen A. Duncan of the 4900 block of Douglas Road was pronounced dead at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday at Presence Mercy Medical Center.

Authorities said that it appears that "Duncan was driving her 1997 Ford Crown Victoria southbound on DuPage Parkway at a high rate of speed when she made a hard-right turn to go westbound on Bilter Road," at around 1:35 p.m. Friday, police said. "She then lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and drove into the retention pond."

Police and Aurora Fire Department personnel pulled the woman out of the car with assistance from bystanders and transported her to a nearby hospital, police said.

Officials said the car was submerged in about eight feet of water.

After a search of the pond, divers did not locate any additional victims.

The Aurora Police Traffic Division is handling the ongoing investigation.

An autopsy is pending at the Kane County Coroner's Office.
