Woman Crossing Street Killed in Summit Hit-and-Run

A 64-year-old woman was killed Thursday morning when a semitrailer ran her over and drove away in southwest suburban Summit.

Hilda Hernandez walking across Harlem Avenue at Archer about 5:45 a.m. when she was clipped and then run over by a semi turning right onto Harlem, Summit police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The semitrailer, described as dark blue or black with white writing on its side, drove off without stopping, Summit Detective Sergeant Robert Mase said. The semi had mismatched mud flaps, and was possibly a Mack with a sleeper cab. There was no description of the driver.

Hernandez was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later, the medical examiner’s office said.

An autopsy Friday found that Hernandez died from multiple injuries she suffered from being struck by a vehicle. Her death was ruled an accident.

Video of the hit-and-run was collected and would released later, Mase said. It was raining at the time and made it difficult to find clear video frames, Mase said.
