Severe Weather Moves Through Chicago Area

Saturday's stormy weather brought high winds and rain to parts of the Chicago area and left thousands without power in Northwest Indiana.

The severe weather quickly moved across areas south of Chicago and into Northwest Indiana.

A Tornado Warning was issued for southern Porter County in Northwest Indiana just after 3 p.m. That warning remained in effect until 3:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service reported a severe squall line in the area capable of producing tornadoes that may not be visible due to heavy rain. The system was moving east at 35 mph.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued Saturday afternoon and remained in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday for La Salle, Kankakee, Grundy, Will, Kendall, Livingston, Knox, Iroquois, and several other Illinois counties.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was also issued for Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter counties in Indiana and Kankakee and Will counties in Illinois. That warning expired at 3:30 p.m.

The alerts warned of wind gusts of up to 80 mph and hail.

NIPSCO reported more than 3,000 homes were without power Sunday morning following the storms. A NIPSCO representative said crews worked overnight and into the morning hours to try to restore power as quickly as possible.

Sunday cools down to the mid-60s with a chance for showers, but storms should be well out of the way of the Chicago area.
