A semi truck carrying 41,000 pounds of honey crashed Wednesday morning on an expressway in Hammond, Indiana, making for a "sticky situation" and causing major delays for commuters.
The rollover crash happened just after 6 a.m., blocking at least three eastbound lanes of Interstate 80/94 near Calumet Avenue, according to Indiana State Police.
The semi was hauling containers of "Amber Honey" and had lost control before it rolled over, authorities said. Five of the containers came out of the box trailer. Eight others remained inside the trailer but at least four of them were leaking, according to police.
Indiana State Police said the driver was coming onto eastbound I-80/94 from Calumet Avenue when his front axle broke. The driver had just fueled up, causing the vehicle to not only leak honey but also diesel fuel.
The driver was not injured, police said.
Traffic was impacted in both directions, police said as they urged drivers to seek alternate routes and stay away from the area.
"This may be an extended clean-up and closure," police said in a release.
