Federal prosecutors have asked for more time to bring an indictment against 14th ward alderman Ed Burke.
Burke was charged with attempted extortion of a local fast food concern in a criminal complaint filed January 2. The court set a deadline of May 3rd for the return of any potential indictments.
“The government is conducting a diligent and thorough investigation into this case, but certain factors have led to this request for an extension,” prosecutors wrote in a motion filed today. “These factors include the complex nature of this public corruption case, and the fact that the investigation is ongoing.”
The motion says Burke’s lawyers say he has no objection to the extension of time.
