The Hammond Fire Department responded to a fire that broke out overnight at a high rise housing complex for people receiving housing assistance.
The fire started at 2:40 a.m. at an apartment building on Michigan St. and Sohl Ave. in Hammond, near the border of Illinois and Indiana.
Authorities say the fire began in an apartment unit on the 9th floor of the building. When crews arrived at the unit, they found one man deceased.
Eight apartment units are currently unlivable due to damage.
Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the fire. Foul play is not suspected.
Video shows multiple Indiana fire trucks and ambulances outside a high rise. Rescue ladders can be seen reaching to the top of the building, where burned out apartments are visible.
Editor's note: This story has been corrected to indicate seniors do not live in the building exclusively.
