Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe pilgrimage in Des Plaines begins; thousands expected to attend

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe begins at 12 p.m. Monday with a prayer service, followed by opening mass at 8 p.m.

Hundreds of thousands of Catholics from across the state and the country are set to visit Des Plaines over the next two days as the annual Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe gets underway.

Thousands participating in the pilgrimage -- the largest honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe in the U.S. -- are expected to arrive at the shrine for its annual celebration, which begins with a prayer service at 12 p.m. Monday, followed by opening mass at 8 p.m. and events throughout the night.

And while the events had not yet begun, many came out Sunday and early Monday morning to begin paying their respects with flowers, candles and photos.

"It grew to me since I was little," Betty Guevera said Sunday. "I always believed in her. I had so many miracles in my life that I had to go through. I always prayed and had faith in her and I know it came true."

"Every year we actually do this," said Luiz Chavez, another visitor. "For me, I feel blessed. That’s how I feel. Especially my dad, my family, and everyone else here."

Considered one of the most significant cultural and religious observances in the world, the event marks the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Virgin Mary. According to the Catholic faith, the Blessed Mother appeared to Juan Diego, a peasant who later became a saint, on Dec. 12, 1531.

This year, the theme of the celebration is peace and unity, officials said.

According to officials, more than 200,000 people are expected to visit the shrine through Tuesday.

The procession to Des Plaines will be televised on Telemundo Chicago and NBC 5 Chicago. The schedule of events can be found below:
