1 Killed in Amtrak Train Crash: Morton Grove Police

Authorities responded to reports of a fatal incident involving a vehicle and an Amtrak train in Morton Grove Sunday afternoon.

According to officials, the incident occurred around 12:05 p.m. near Lincoln and N. Lehigh avenues.

The Amtrak Hiawatha train 334 with 254 passengers on board was reportedly on its way, traveling southbound from Milwaukee to Chicago, police said, when it came into contact with a minivan driving eastbound on Lincoln Ave.

Morton Grove police confirmed to NBC 5 that a train did in fact hit a car, and the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead.

No injuries to the passengers on board were reported.

“Amtrak Police are cooperating with local law enforcement to investigate the incident,” said Jason Abrams, Amtrak spokesman.

At the moment northbound Leigh Ave. is closed from Chestnut to St. Paul Woods, and westbound Lincoln from Ferris to St. Paul Woods is also closed.

Officials urge riders to find alternate routes to enter St. Paul Woods, such as by taking Oakton east of Caldwell.

No other details were immediately known.
