The Best World Guitarist in the World

Local musician Fareed Haque wins honors from Guitar Player; plays show

Accomplished local musician Fareed Haque, whose guitar style veers from jazz to classical to you-name-it global influences, was recently voted "Best World Guitarist" by the readers of Guitar Player magazine. See the man behind the myth as he plays with duo partner Goran Ivanovic Friday night, April 3, at HotLoft, a performance venue above Fizz Bar & Grill in Lakeview.

The son of a Pakistani father and a Chilean mother, Haque has enjoyed a global existence, spending extensive stays in Spain, France, Iran, Pakistan and Chile. He seems to have soaked up these worldly influences, which ooze out of his precise playing style and impressive speed. Haque has collaborated with the likes of Sting, Kurt Elling and Ramsey Lewis. He appears often with Ivanovic, another guitar prodigy who specializes in classical, jazz, Balkan and world music.

Also on the evening's bill is Balkano, a Chicago-based sextet that blends the sounds of Bulgarian wedding music, traditional klezmer and Latin jazz. Doors open at 7PM, and the show starts at 8PM. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.
