Life Beyond the Shot Glass

Zocalo celebrates National Tequila Day with a week's worth of events

If your only experiences with tequila involved a salt shaker, a wedge of lime and maybe a worm (eeewww), allow Zocalo to educate you. The River North Mexican restaurant is celebrating National Tequila Day (Friday, July 24, doncha know) with a vengeance, serving up a week's worth of tequila flights and a special tasting to introduce the uninitiated to the luscious libation.

Zocalo is a mecca of tequilas every day of the year, offering 130 variations available by the glass or mixed in a margarita or other cocktail. During the National Tequila Day celebration, you can try a different flight each day of the week, including an Anejos Flight ($10) today, Tuesday, July 21, a Tequila Infusions Flight ($12) on Wednesday, Boutique Tequilas ($10) on Thursday, and a Republica Mexicana flight, featuring tequilas from across the country ($12) on Friday.

A special Jalisco "Highlands vs. Lowlands" tequila tasting will take place on Wednesday, July 22. The event kicks off at 6PM with a Don Julio specialty cocktail and passed appetizers. You'll then take part in sampling Don Julio Blanco, Reposado and Anejo tequilas, along with Cuervo Platino Silver, Tradicional Reposado and Reserva de la Familia Anejo.

During the tasting, Zocalo will set up taquiza stations, brimming with braised and grilled meats, homemade salsas and handmade tortillas. Raffles and prizes will add to the festivities, including Zocalo gift certificates and tequila-filled gift bags. Guests can also purchase Don Julio and Cuervo tequilas at discounts. The "Highland vs. Lowlands" tasting is priced at $20 per person.
