Salmonella Prompts Recall of Chocolate Marshmallow Eggs

An Indiana candy factory recalled its treats because some tested positive for Salmonella. 

Zachary Confections Inc. in Frankfort, Ind., made a voluntary recall on their chocolate covered marshmallow eggs after Salmonella was detected in a marshmallow egg batch.

No sicknesses have been reported however, according to their press release. They said this recall is out of an abundance of caution.

“We are dedicated to manufacturing wholesome products for our customers," said George Anichini, Vice President of Zachary Confections.

The product was shipped to retail stores in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The packaging for this product is white egg crates with purple green and yellow lettering plus a Best Buy Date of Feb. 14, 2014.

A group of 100 marshmallow eggs UPC code is 75186 31797 3 and the individual unit UPC code is 075186 15797 8. For recall code dates click here.

FDA inspectors are investigating the potential source of contamination.

Zachary Confections will suspend the production of the eggs until the source is identified. No other Zachary Confections Inc products are included in this recall.

Consumers are advised to return or dispose the product. For more information call Zachary Confections Customer Service at (765) 654-8356 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Salmonella is a food poisoning caused by bacteria. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramping. More severe cases of salmonella can be found in children, frail or elderly people and others with a weak immune system.
