Daughter of a Sheriff's Deputy Killed, 2 Others Injured in South Side Shooting

Tiara Parks, 23, was a recent college graduate and single mother, according to her father, a Cook County Sheriff's deputy

A woman was killed and two men injured in a shooting Saturday night on Chicago's South Side.

The three victims were getting out of a car in the 11400 block of S Stewart in the Roseland neighborhood around 9 p.m. when they heard gunshots and realized they'd been hit, according to Chicago police.

A 24-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the back, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the left leg, and a 23-year-old woman was shot in the head. They were taken to Roseland Community Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead.

A 23-year-old woman is dead and two others injured after a shooting on Chicago’s South Side Saturday night. NBC 5’s Emily Florez reports.

She was later identified as Tiara Parks of the 9200 block of S Bishop St, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Her father Michael Parks is a Cook County Sheriff's deputy, who told NBC 5 she was a recent college graduate, and a single mom of a 3-year-old boy.

"I did not expect to be standing here doing the job that I do," he said. "My daughter's life was snatched from me, my family and I had to tell her grandmother that she's no longer with us."

Parks said he risks his life every day in his job to keep people safe, but he is heartbroken that he could not protect his daughter.

"There's nothing much more to say," Parks added. "We have got to get out here and do more. It's your responsibility, not just mine."

Parks insists that more must be done to help young people in Chicago.

"Tell them to loosen those purse strings and get programs out here to save these kids. 'Cause if they don't, they may be the ones being interviewed by you."

"We are deeply sadden[ed] by the tragic and senseless death of Tiara Parks, the daughter of one of our court deputies," reads a statement from the Cook County Sheriff's office. "Deputy Parks and his family are in our thoughts and prayers."

Both male victims are listed in stable condition. No one is in custody and police continue to investigate.
