3 Dead, 12 Wounded in First 8 Hours of Memorial Day Weekend

A 15-year-old girl was one of three people killed along with another 12 who were wounded in less than eight hours of shootings to start the Memorial Day holiday weekend, police said.

The most recent homicide occurred in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

A 23-year-old man got into an fight with two other males inside a business about 5:15 a.m. in the 6300 block of West Montrose, police said.

The man was shot in the head and dead at the scene, police said.

A 15-year-old girl and 28-year-old man were in a vehicle in the 2400 block of North Lake Shore Drive just before 1:30 a.m. when a black Nissan pulled alongside them and someone inside opened fire, police said.

They took themselves to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, but the girl was later transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The man was shot in the arm and suffered a graze wound to the head, police said. His condition had stabilized.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office didn’t confirm the two deaths Saturday morning.

Late Friday, a man was shot to death in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Just before 11 p.m., the 25-year-old was sitting in a vehicle parked in the 3700 block of West 75th Place when a gunman walked up and opened fire, according to Chicago Police.

Mark Lindsey, shot repeatedly across the chest and body, tried to drive away, but crashed into another vehicle on the block, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 11:34 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

A 24-year-old was in the 4300 block of West West End about 4:35 a.m. when two males walked up to him and opened fire, police said. The man suffered graze wounds to his arm, head and eyebrow. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

About 4 a.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the 4600 block of West Jackson, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

About 45 minutes earlier, a 25-year-old man was shot in the 4600 block of South Honore in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

A 21-year-old man was driving in the 4300 block of North Kimball in the Irving Park neighborhood about 2:55 a.m. when someone shot him in the clavicle, police said. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition.

A 17-year-old boy was outside in the 1200 block of South Independence about 2:35 a.m. when someone in a passing black SUV shot him in the knee, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

Three men were wounded in a West Garfield Park drive-by about 1:45 a.m.

The three were outside in the 3300 block of West Walnut when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire, police said.

One man, 26, was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg, police said. His condition had stabilized. Another man, 23, was shot in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in guarded condition, police said.

The third man, 27, took himself to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the thigh, police said. His condition had also stabilized.

A man and woman, both in their 50s, were shot in the South Deering neighborhood about 35 minutes earlier.

The man was on a porch in the 9900 block of South Paxton when two males walked up and opened fire, police said. He suffered a graze wound to his right forearm and refused medical attention at the scene.

A 53-year-old woman was shot in her lower back as she was inside a bedroom in the home, police said. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where her condition stabilized.

The holiday weekend’s first shooting was reported in University Village about 9:25 p.m. Friday.

An 18-year-old man was standing on the front porch of a home in the 1200 block of West Grenshaw at when someone in a dark car opened fire, according to police.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

In 2015, 12 people were killed and another 43 wounded in shootings across Chicago.
