Jason Heyward Buys David Ross Incredible Retirement Gift

Jason Heyward, and the newly acquired free agent outfielder has given Ross an awesome send-off

Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant are already paying tribute to Chicago Cubs teammate David Ross with an Instagram account documenting his final season, but one of their new teammates has seriously upped the ante.

That teammate is Jason Heyward, and the newly acquired free agent outfielder has given Ross an even better send-off: he paid for the catcher to get a hotel suite for every road game the team will play during the 2016 season.

Here’s how Carrie Muskat described the gift on Cubs.com:

“The two were lockermates in Atlanta when Heyward made his Major League debut in 2010, and Ross had quite an impact.

“That’s one of the first emotional moments I had in the offseason,” Ross said Monday. “[Heyward] texted me this nice long message about supposedly what I’ve done for him. That was cool to start reflecting back and people you’ve played with start saying nice things.”

Heyward signed an eight-year contract with the Cubs that will pay him $184 million (if he doesn’t exercise one of the opt-out clauses), but even with that salary, paying for a special room for a teammate that is going through one more big league season is a very special gesture by the outfielder.

There is no word yet on what the next step in the “Honor Ross” game is going to be. Could Miguel Montero buy his teammate a new car? Or how about Jon Lester paying a pilot to fly around Wrigley with a “Thank You David” banner behind his plane?
