Truck Driver Flees Road-Rage Shooting, Flags Police at Nearby Crime Scene

Two unrelated violent incidents intersected Tuesday when a truck driver fleeing a road-rage shooting flagged down police investigating a nearby crime, authorities confirmed.

The trucker happened upon the aftermath of a shooting near 87th and Racine streets, where police say a person was shot in the leg from a moving vehicle. The car involved in that incident sped off before crashing at 95th Street and Vincennes Avenue, near the Metra Rock Island tracks. Trains were stopped for hours, three cars were entangled and two of them were on fire. Four people were treated for injuries but expected to survive, officials said.

It was this fiery scene that veteran truck driver Norman Scott, whose cab had just been shot up in an unrelated road-rage incident, came upon during his search for help. Scott’s tractor-trailer was shot at near 95th Street and Genoa Avenue.

“It’s a miracle I’m alive,” a still shaken Scott told NBC 5 after the incident.

Police say they are looking for a man in his 40s driving an older model Gray Lexus who may have been involved in the shooting of Scott’s vehicle.

“I see his car coming up real fast he jumps out the car, gets in front and aims just like this and all I could do is duck and I hear the pop, pop, pop,” he said. “It's an automatic and truck was still in gear and all I could do was hit the accelerator and try to run him over.”

Scott, 63, said after Tuesday night’s violence, he wonders if he will stay on the road.

"30 plus years [as a truck driver] and maybe it's time to get out now,” he said.

Police say they are questioning two people in the drive-by shooting at 87th and Racine streets.
