Chicago Man Fatally Shot While Walking Dog in Dolton

A Chicago man has died after being shot multiple times while walking his dog in south suburban Dolton Wednesday, police said.

Police said officers responded to a call reporting gunshots fired in the 14800 block of Kimbark just after midnight. Upon arrival, 21-year-old Demetrius Southerland was found lying face down unresponsive on the sidewalk, according to police.

Southerland lives in Chicago but was visiting his girlfriend in the south suburban town at the time. Police said he was out walking his dog on the block when he was shot.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with multiple gunshot wounds, where he was placed on life support and died late Wednesday afternoon.

Southerland’s girlfriend, Reneisha Woods, told NBC Chicago she is six months pregnant with his child. The couple was scheduled to find out the baby’s gender on Monday.

In an evening press conference, Dolton's mayor said the shooting was the first the city has had in almost two years.

Southerland’s mother said her son had no criminal history and was a “good kid.” He worked with his grandfather in the construction business.

Investigators said they believe the shooting was an act of “senseless violence."

Police said they have yet to identify a suspect as they continue to investigate the crime scene.
