Blackhawks Trade Andrew Shaw to Montreal

The Chicago Blackhawks don't own a draft pick in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft, but they're still busy in Buffalo as they've sent Andrew Shaw to the Montreal Canadiens in a trade.

In exchange, the Blackhawks received two second round draft picks from the Canadiens, the 39th and 45th overall selections in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Reports swirled on Friday that Shaw was seeking a contract worth $4.5 million per season, and with the Blackhawks hard up against the salary cap, it was decided that they couldn't afford to give in to his contract demands.

The Blackhawks now own three second round draft picks in this year's draft, with the 39th, 45th, and 50th selections all in their possession. They acquired the 50th overall pick in the trade that sent Bryan Bickell and Teuvo Teravainen to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Canadiens also made another move to recoup picks, getting two second round selections from the Washington Capitals in exchange for winger Lars Eller.
