4-Year-Old Boy Critically Injured in Irving Park Fire

The boy received second-degree burns to more than 75 percent of his body

A 4-year-old boy suffered burns to more than 75 percent of his body in a house fire early Sunday morning in the North Side Irving Park neighborhood.

The fire broke out shortly before 3 a.m. at a coach house in the 4300 block of North Drake, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.

The boy, identified as Tyler Roe, suffered from smoke inhalation and second-degree burns to more than 75 percent of his body, including his stomach and legs, Chicago Fire officials said. He was transported to Swedish Covenant Hospital.

Roe's godfather told NBC Chicago he was at home with the 4-year-old boy and the boy's teenage brother when the fire started. He attempted to put out the blaze with water, but it was too intense.

Firefighters rescued the 4-year-old boy after he became trapped in the house when the stairs caught fire, his godfather said.

Roe's godfather and brother were unharmed, but two Chicago firefighters received minor burns to the hands and face and were transported to Swedish Covenant Hospital as well.

Garbage cans were lit on fire a few doors down, neighbors said. Additionally, police said they recovered a gas can from the alley.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Red Cross is helping the family as the boy recovers from his injuries.
