The Cubs might return at least some stability to their lineup Thursday, if not a semblance of normalcy.

Catcher Willson Contreras, who has been sidelined since Aug. 12 because of a knee injury, heads to Indianapolis to join Triple-A Iowa for a two-day rehab assignment Tuesday and Wednesday.

“And then we’ll see from there,” said Contreras, who took full batting practice and ran on the field Sunday ahead of what’s scheduled to be four-inning and seven-inning assignments behind the plate for Iowa.

The Cubs open a homestand Thursday with the opener of a four-game series against the Pirates.

Contreras, a two-time All-Star, said he doesn’t know how much he might get spelled as the Cubs play out the string in September.

But despite some outside speculation that the Cubs would be better served to take the pressure off his body and shut him down from catching, Contreras said that’s not happening.

“I’ll be catching this year,” he said.

How much? That’s probably more of a TBA proposition.

“I don’t know how the playing time’s going to be,” he said. “I don’t know [how much] it’s going to be behind the plate or in the infield.

“We’re going to build the progress behind the plate.”
