Cubs Option Justin Steele, Rex Brothers to South Bend Training Site

The Cubs made a bullpen move on Thursday, optioning lefty relievers Rex Brothers and Justin Steele to their South Bend training site.

Brothers made the Cubs Opening Day roster, making two appearances. He threw a scoreless inning on July 25 against Milwaukee, walking one with two strikeouts. He last appeared on July 29 in Cincinnati, when he allowed three earned runs on two walks and two hits (both home runs).

Steele joined the Cubs on Sunday after reliever James Norwood hit the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. He didn't make any appearances.

The Cubs roster now has 14 position players and 14 pitchers, including nine relievers.

Every team had to trim their active roster from 30 to 28 players on Thursday. MLB's original plan was for rosters to decrease to 28 for Weeks 3 and 4 of the season and then 26 for Weeks 5 and 6.

However, the league and players union recently agreed for that number to hold at 28 for the remainder of the season, including postseason.
