Cubs Free Agency Rumors: Team Interested in Tulowitzki, Descalso

Tulowitzki missed the entire 2018 season with bone spurs in his heels

The Chicago Cubs have been quiet for most of the offseason, but there is a possibility that things could start picking up for the team in the coming weeks.

The team has been linked to several potential free agent acquisitions, and we are here to round up all the latest rumors for you:

Cubs Potentially in on Former All-Star?

Earlier this month the Toronto Blue Jays announced that they would be letting shortstop Troy Tulowitzki hit free agency, and according to a new report, the Cubs could potentially be kicking the tires on his services.

According to Fancred’s Jon Heyman, the Cubs are one of the teams that has been in contact with Tulowitzki, and they will send a scout to an upcoming workout. There are six teams in the running for his services, according to MLB Network’s Susan Slusser, and Tulowitzki’s agent will narrow the field soon.

Cubs Also Reportedly in on Descalso

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are in hot pursuit of free agent infielder Daniel Descalso. Later in the day, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale confirmed Rosenthal’s report, but said that the Cubs may potentially be priced out of his services on the market.

In 423 plate appearances with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season, Descalso had 13 home runs and 57 RBI, and batted .238.

The Cubs are looking for infield help after non-tendering Ronald Torreyes and Mike Freeman earlier this offseason, and the team could be looking for depth as they prepare for shortstop Addison Russell to serve a suspension at the beginning of next season.

Cubs Still Not Actively Pursuing Harper

According to’s Mark Feinsand, the Cubs still are not one of the teams actively courting outfielder Bryce Harper. Instead, the team is one of several that are “monitoring” the situation.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox are both actively interested in signing Harper, and the Los Angeles Dodgers have also popped up on several occasions as a potential suitor, but nothing seems imminent on that front.
