The Netherlands maintained its stranglehold on speedskating gold medals in Pyeongchang Wednesday as Jorien Ter Mors sprinted to an Olympic-record victory in the 1,000 meters.

American Brittany Bowe missed the podium by less than half a second, coming in fourth place. Team USA's Heather Bergsma, the reigning world champion in the discipline, came eighth, while Olympic rookie Jerica Tandiman came in 28th.

The Dutch have won gold in every speedskating event at the 2018 Winter Games so far — one a day since the first day of medal events — and there was an all-orange medal podium at the women's 3,000-meter race Saturday. It shouldn't be surprising, since the Dutch had four sweeps at the Sochi Games four years ago and finished with 23 out of 36 medals.

The Dutch had already won eight of 12 medals at the Pyeongchang Games, while U.S. speedskaters continue to be shut out from the podium.

Bowe's finish is the closest the U.S. has come to winning thus far. The 29-year-old Florida native is a three-time medalist in the 1000 meters at the world championships, winning gold in 2015 and bronze in 2013 and 2016
