A 55-year-old woman is dead after she was among two people hit by a car Thursday that was fleeing from Chicago police on the city’s South Side.
Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a gray sedan when it fled from the officers and struck three people in the 7900 block of South Lafayette Avenue in the West Chatham neighborhood about 6:48 p.m., police said.
The woman was taken to the Chicago Medical Center where she was later pronoucned dead. A 30-year-old man who was also struck by the vehicle was treated by the Chicago Fire Department at the scene.
Witnesses gathered around as the victims were loaded onto stretchers and first responders began chest compressions on at least one of them.
A bag of colorful candy was spilled over the roadyway where the crash occurred. An umbrella strowler lay crumpled in the street near a bus stop.
“(The) offenders are in custody,” police said.
