Waves of Storms Bring Damaging Winds to Chicago Area

Two waves of storms hit the Chicago area Wednesday, bringing damaging winds and heavy rain to much of the city and its suburbs.

Winds of 60 MPH and quarter-sized hail have been reported in a storm hammering Kankakee County, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 7 p.m. Newton and Lake counties in Indiana are also impacted by the warning.

Later in the evening, Iroquois, Porter, and Jasper counties were also added to the warning.

The thunderstorms are part of a second wave of storms expected to impact the Chicagoland area. Earlier Wednesday, a band of showers and isolated storms began moving into the area from west to east. The storms hit the city by around 8 a.m. and ultimately faded out in northwest Indiana.

Small hail was reported in this system for some locations.

The largest threat for severe weather this evening remains south of Interstate 80 and in northwest Indiana.

Pleasant weather returns Thursday as highs hit the low- to mid-60s lakefront and mid- to upper-70s, turning cooler along the lakefront in the late-afternoon and evening.

But an unsettled pattern arrives Friday and continues through the weekend, bringing the chance for showers and thunderstorms each day.
