Police Reopen Dixmoor Girl's 1991 Murder Case

The Cook County sheriff and Dixmoor police say they're reopening their investigation into the case of a 14-year-old girl who was murdered in 1991.

Five teenagers were convicted in the death of Cateresa Matthews, but they were released from prison in 2011 based on DNA evidence after serving 19 years. They were later given certificates of innocence.

On Wednesday, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said his office and Dixmoor police would reinvestigate the case. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Dart said they would work to "bring justice" to the girl and her family.

The five teens filed a lawsuit in 2012 against state and local police claiming officers framed them. The lawsuits claim DNA evidence identified a convicted sex offender for the girl's murder.
