Teen Shot in Arm by Chicago Police Officer

A 16-year-old boy was shot by a police officer Thursday night in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 10 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Sacramento, Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement on Twitter.

Police said they were called to the area for multiple reports of shots fired, but soon after they arrived, they saw the teen running through a gangway in the area.

"One of the officers exited his vehicle and an armed confrontation ensued culminating in the officer discharging his weapon," said Sgt. Cindy Guerra.

Guglielmi said the “offender” was shot in the arm following the armed encounter with police. A weapon was recovered.

Fire officials said the person was shot was 16 years old. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

Guglielmi said no officers were injured. Further details on the shooting weren't immediately released.

The officers involved will be placed on desk duty for 30 days, per department policy, officials said.

Additional information was not immediately available.
