A 68-year-old suburban man was fatally struck by a car while getting his mail Monday night, and police are still searching for the driver responsible.
The Lake County Sheriff’s office said James Spicak was found unresponsive around 11 p.m. in a ditch near his mailbox in the 16000 block of West Pope Boulevard in Prairie View. He had injuries consistent with being hit by a moving vehicle, police said.
Results from a preliminary investigation indicate the vehicle was traveling westbound on West Pope Boulevard near North Eugene Avenue when it struck several mailboxes and Spicak.
Spicak was taken to Condell Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The crash remains under investigation, but anyone with information is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s office at (847) 549-5200.
