Teen Charged in Chase, Rollover Crash Could “Lose His Tongue,” Attorney Says

Ronald Maas was injured in an hours-long manhunt last month that included police chases, head-on crashes, and an officer-involved shooting

An Ingleside teen who suffered a gunshot wound to the cheek during a police chase last month could "lose his tongue," his defense attorney said Wednesday.

Despite the injuries, Lake County Circuit Court Judge Christen Bishop refused to lower Ronald Maas' $2 million bail set after the 18-year-old Maas led officers on an hours-long pursuit that included allegedly stolen vehicles, head-on crashes and an officer-involved shooting, The Lake County News-Sun reported.

Maas faces charges that include attempted murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an injury accident and criminal damage to government property.

Defense attorney James Bertucci said his client's jaw is wired shut and that he's missing several teeth and has a hole in his throat and trachea.

In declining to lower Maas' bond, Bishop said he considered the teen a flight risk and reminded those present that Maas was wanted on an outstanding warrant when he was taken into custody on Nov. 14.
