New Children's Hospital Dedicates Garden In Honor Of Kevin Daley

New facility is scheduled to open in June

With brothers Bill and John looking on, former Mayor Richard Daley and his children cut the ribbon on a new garden at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.

The garden, in a glass enclosure on the facility's 11th floor, is named after Kevin Daley, the former mayor's son who died in the early 80s.

"His mom, Maggie, once referred to Kevin as 'That Brave Little Boy,' and indeed he was," said Dr. David McClone, a neurosurgeon who treated the young boy after his 1979 birth with Spina Bifida.

The experience inspired the Daley family to support causes that help children, especially vulnerable children.

"Mayor and Maggie Daley worked to create a city in which all children are safe, they're nurtured and they're educated and encouraged to reach their full potential," said McClone.

The idea of the garden is to give children, many who will be confined to the hospital for months, a relaxing place with sunlight and fresh air. The garden is expected to open in June.
