Stabbing Suspect Arrested, Freed Shortly Before Murders

Less than an hour before a brutal attack that left three people dead, the man accused of the crime bonded out of jail after being arrested on an outstanding warrant.

According to the Chicago Tribune, officers went to the apartment of D'Andre Howard early Friday morning for a noise complaint. A routine check of his name uncovered an outstanding warrant related to a traffic violation. He was arrested, booked, processed and bonded out.

Hoffman Estates police said Howard gave no indication of being violent during the short time he was in custody, but shortly after leaving jail, he got into an argument with his girlfriend, 23-year-old Amanda Engelhardt, with whom he has an 8-month-old child.

Prosecutors on Saturday said Howard confronted his girlfriend at her family's home, then tied her up, along with her mother and 18-year-old sister. Howard used a knife to stab the mother in the heart and a lung, then used it to kill the grandmother and father when they tried to help. Engelhardt's sister was also killed.

Hoffman Estates police said a call came in from a "distraught female," claiming someone had been stabbed, at 6:44 a.m.

Howard has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count each of attempted murder and unlawful restraint.
