With Labor Day weekend travel expected to peak heading into the long holiday weekend, Illinois officials have announced some changes to state roads that could impact drivers.
Similar to other holidays like Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July, and Memorial Day, Labor Day brings with it heavy traffic, particularly on the Friday before.
The average American can expect approximately 90% longer travel times, which means a drive that normally takes an hour could take around 1 hour and 54 minutes. (Travel tips here)
To combat that, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced many lanes that have been closed for construction are slated to reopen, where possible, for the holiday.
Officials said any "non-emergency closures will be suspended" between 3 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday.
Still, several will remain in place during the holiday weekend and transportation officials warned drivers to expect delays in those locations.
