Gravel Truck Spills Onto I-55 During Morning Rush

Truck Spills Gravel

Traffic was slowed to a crawl on the Stevenson Expressway Tuesday morning after a dump truck spilled its load of gravel.

The truck toppled on an entrance ramp to southbound I-55 near southwest suburban Summit, scattering the gravel not only on the ramp, but also to the road below.

Mike Lorber, reporting from the Sky5 helicopter, said the overturned truck closed the "on" ramp from First Avenue to I-55, and slowed the traffic below when it's contents littered the outbound lanes.

The gravel truck flipped at about 6 a.m., according to an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper.

At 6:45 a.m., an Illinois Department of Transportation truck dragged the disabled rig off the ramp, as IDOT trucks moved in for the clean up.
