Dennis Anderson won the Democratic nomination for the 14th Congressional District against John Hosta with 65 percent, according to projections from the Associated Press.
Anderson will run against Republican incumbent Randy Hultgren in November, marking his second run against Hultgren.
Prior to his retirement in 2010, Anderson, who lives in Gurnee, worked at Loyola University Chicago’s Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center providing administrative support.
Of the two Democrats challenging Hultgren, Anderson leaned more toward the left. The main priorities outlined in his campaign are job creation and economic recovery, stressing that private and public sector businesses should work together and form partnerships. He also expressed support for improving the district’s transportation infrastructure.
The 14th Congressional District stretches from Aurora and Elgin almost to the Iowa border. Traditionally, the district has had Republican representation, with the exception of democrat Bill Foster’s win in a special election in 2008.
