Two children died Tuesday after being pulled from the Kankakee River in northwest Indiana, authorities said.
According to The Times of Northwest Indiana, officials with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said that at around 5:15 p.m., the agency was notified that two children were "in danger of drowning in the river."
The children were found in the LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area, which is located at 4752 W. 1050N in Lake Village, Indiana, near the border between Newton and Lake counties, according to the Times.
A 4-year-old child, later identified as Levi Patillo, of the 11900 block of Nassau Lane in Demotte, was taken to Franciscan Health hospital in Crown Point where he was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office.
Information on the second child was not immediately available.
The Lake County Sheriff's Department told the Times that 34-year-old Eric Patillo, of Thayer, was being held on two counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
Details of the relationship between Patillo and the children was not available, and the investigation into the incident remained ongoing.
