A toddler is safe after the car it was in was taken Monday from the west suburban parking lot of an Italian restaurant, an official said.
An Indiana woman parked her car with the baby inside in front of Al’s Italian Restaurant in the 6000 block of West Cermak Road in Cicero, according to town spokesman Ray Hanania.
Hannania said the woman left the car running with her child inside. A man wearing a red shirt, described as Hispanic, 5’7’’ and about 140 pounds, got in the car and drove off, Hanania said. The restaurant owner and mother of the child called 911.
The alleged car thief later abandoned the car “apparently realizing there was a baby in the car,” Hanania said.
The car was found in an alley a few blocks away after a neighbor heard the baby crying and called police.
Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call Cicero police at 708-652-2130.
The mother is being questioned by police, Hanania said.
