A day after Lori Lightfoot became the first ever African-American woman to be elected mayor of Chicago, the nation’s first African-American president praised her in a social media post.
Former President Barack Obama took to Twitter to congratulate Lightfoot on her victory Tuesday night, and also praised Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle for her efforts on the campaign trail:
“Great to see Chicago’s historic mayoral race between two highly qualified candidates,” the former president tweeted. “Congrats to our next mayor Lori Lightfoot – and Toni Preckwinkle campaigned hard and did us proud. I know that with our city’s heart and Lori’s leadership, Chicago’s best days are still ahead.”
In addition to his tweet, a source told NBC 5’s Mary Ann Ahern that the former president also called Lightfoot to congratulate her on her victory.
In the day after her historic victory, Lightfoot met with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and is planning to meet with Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.
