A 7-year-old boy is in serious condition after being shot while sitting in the backseat of a car with his mother.
Police say the boy’s mother was in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked in the 1000 block of North Leamington in the city's Austin neighborhood around 10 p.m. Wednesday when some opened fire at the car.
The boy was hit by the gunfire in the upper right side of his back, according to police. The mother, who managed to escape the bullets unharmed, drove off, taking her son to Oak Park’s West Suburban Medical Center before he was transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.
Police are looking for suspects who could be behind the shooting. The 7-year-old was one of eight people wounded in shootings across Chicago Wednesday.
